What is an Ideal Customer Profile (ICP)? A practical guide for founders
An ICP is the evidence-based picture of the customer you are best placed to win. Here is how to build one, and why it makes every marketing decision cheaper.
An Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) is a clear, evidence-based description of the customer you are best placed to win, serve and keep. It is not your whole market and it is not a made-up persona. It is drawn from who already buys, stays and pays well.
ICP vs target market vs persona
Your target market is everyone who could use what you sell. Your ICP is the narrow slice inside it that buys faster, pays more and stays longer. A buyer persona then describes the people inside those ICP accounts: who researches, who decides and what worries them.
The six questions every ICP answers
- Who: company size, industry, location, or for consumers, life stage and situation
- Why: the problem they need solved and the outcome they want
- When: the trigger events that make them act now
- How: where they search and which channels they trust
- Decision: who signs, who influences, and what objections they raise
- Journey: how they move from discovery to purchase and repeat
Where the evidence comes from
Start with your own customer data, then add buyer interviews, search and AI questions, competitor comparisons, reviews and chat transcripts, and market signals such as seasons and regulation. If you have no customers yet, interviews and search data carry more weight.
Why it pays off
Once the ICP is clear, your website speaks to one reader, your ads target one audience and your sales team stops qualifying people who will never buy. That is the idea behind ICP Magnet: build every engine around one sharp picture of the right customer.
