How to set up a company in Dubai: a step-by-step guide for foreigners
From choosing activities to opening a bank account: the steps to form a Dubai company as a foreign founder, mainland or free zone.
Setting up in Dubai follows the same sequence whether you choose the mainland or one of Dubai's free zones. Get the order right and the process is straightforward.
The steps
- Define your business activities and the customers you will serve
- Choose mainland or free zone based on where your customers are
- Reserve a trade name that follows UAE naming rules
- Get initial approval and any special approvals your activity needs
- Choose an office: flexi-desk, shared office or private office
- Sign the memorandum of association and submit documents
- Receive your trade licence and establishment card
- Apply for your residence visa, medical test and Emirates ID
- Open a corporate bank account
- Register for corporate tax, and for VAT once you pass the threshold
Documents to prepare
- Passport copies of shareholders and managers
- A short business plan
- Proof of address
- For a corporate shareholder: board resolution and company documents, often attested
Mistakes that cost time
- Choosing activities that do not match what you sell
- Picking the cheapest package without checking visa allowance and renewal costs
- Leaving the bank account until last
- Launching without a website, Google Business Profile or WhatsApp line
Common questions
Can I set up a Dubai company without living in the UAE?
Yes. Many free zones let you complete most steps remotely. A residence visa still makes banking and daily operations easier.
Do I need a local partner in Dubai?
Not for most activities. Since 2021, foreigners can own 100% of most mainland companies, and free zones have always allowed full foreign ownership.
Rules, fees and processes change. Confirm the details with the relevant authority or a licensed adviser before you commit.
