How to validate a startup idea before you build anything
Five quick ways to test whether people will pay, using conversations, landing pages and small experiments.
Most failed startups built something nobody wanted. Validation means proving demand before you spend on the full product.
Five validation methods
- Talk to 10 to 15 potential buyers about the problem, not your solution
- Put up a landing page with a clear offer and measure sign-ups
- Run a small ad test to see who clicks
- Offer a pre-sale or paid pilot
- Show a clickable prototype and watch how people use it
What counts as real demand
Compliments do not count. Money, time or a signed commitment do.
